Contribute

Just wondering if anyone has used Contribute on a web standards project?

Working on some xhtml/css templates, the content of which i've been told will eventually be getting edited using Contribute. I'm downloading a demo just now, but the main thing i'm concerned about is the way it'll render the pages as i'm assuming it'll have it's own inbuilt browser (maybe based on IE?).

Any hints, tips, things to watch out for are much appreciated, cheers

I don't bother worrying about what Contribute will do to the code... I design a template that is standards compliant, and if the client wants to bugger about with Contribute then that is not my problem.

Yeah that's great, but unfortunately I deal with clients actually worth caring about.

Stick: Cheers, i've been reading the developers centre on Macromedia's site. It's pretty depressing to be honest. One the one hand, the client's been sold on the accessiblity and usability side of things, and on the other they're using contribute for editing. I'll just have to add Contribute to my list of things to check the site in I guess, although I can see a few corners being cut to make it look at the very least similar to the live site.

Yeah, overall it was ok. Had to make some big concessions. The main one being having to use a table for the main layout (managed to keep it down to 3 cells though). The float rendering is balls - like dreamweaver, same engine I guess.

I've had the same experience as dan. There's something really wrong about having to dumb down your shit just so it renders ok in the edit screen. I reckon there's a gap in the market for something a little more lightweight (and cheaper) that renders the page like a decent browser and maybe only allows editing of the pages' text.

I've set up little cms's kind of like this with php, but it takes time and they've got to be plugged into a database, which slows everything down.

Oh, as far as clients messing with things that you don't want edited, you just wack 'template editable' begin and end comments before and after the stuff you want them to be able to edit, and the rest is off limits. You can also hide styles you've used in laying out the site by wacking 'mmhide' before class names. Still a clunky program for mine.

I meant to put a question mark by it too, but forgot.

Pretty useless post, really.

We were offering Contribute to clients for a while, but we don't anymore as we all came to the conclusion that it is rubbish. Never thought much of Dreamweaver MX's WYSIWYG mode for CSS layouts, and I assume Contribute uses the same engine.
