dhtml, is that classed as standards? or should I stay away from DHTML full stop ( . )

If by that you mean mixing xhtml with javascript, more specifically the DOM, then no, there's nothing wrong with it and DOM is a web standard.

You've just got to make sure that the site is still as accessible when people have javascript turned off.
