image rollovers

ok, where design dictates that css is not going to be an option for a menu, what do people do for rollover images in a valid environment?

in the past i've traditionally used javascript although more recently, laziness and speed have pushed me towards using the beaver's 'interactive image' utility.

i've looked into css rollovers today but they're just not stable enough accross the range of common browsers for me to feel comfortable enough to use them.

thoughts in the grey box below please...

ta.

I can't think of a modern browser where css rollovers aren't an option.

Where've you been looking? Pixy's examples are a good starting point...

yeah, but that's still using html text as the link. i'm talking about when you've got to use a specific (non-system) font.

(it is for navigation)

Like Bill says, just use an image replacement technique.

Surely not. Macs are built by God himself, aren't they?

Anyway, there are hacks for such problems - investigate clipping.

Put what you have online so we can pick through it.
I've never needed to implement clipping to solve a problem with any CSS *IR techiniques.
(Can't actually recall having any problems with *IR on a mac.)
