flash replacement by css

ok, we've covered image replacement but i would like people's opinions on flash replacement.

theory would be to have a bit of eye candy on a page in flash, but it doesn't have any content in it, no navigation, its just a thing that looks pretty. i looked into inman's fir comments but that's really for text replacement - there will be no text/content in the flash.

i want to hide it from mobile devices (phones, crackberrys, pda's etc etc) as it'll be too big to display correctly on their screens. xhtml 1.0 strict. one site fits all.

thoughts in the grey box below. ta.

Wouldn't the PDA's, etc, just ignore the flash anyway? If not could always filter on UA data, perhaps a pain in the arse though.

Also, if there's no content, what are you intending on replacing it with?

Oh, and remeber to use flash satay for embedding into xhtml strict

isn't there an @media option for handhelds, etc…

if so, you could implement one with a …display: none; for the flash container.

Might need to do some testing. Some handhelds have been made to choose media=screen over media=handheld.

Genius.

Genius.

Why that's clever.

Maybe a combination of server side UA-detecting and @media output is the way to go..

from my understanding mobile devices just ignore the flash and don't spend any time downloading it, anyone capable of backing me up on this?

when we tested this Michael Owen site we did on my boss's phone the flash was just completely ignored, however one phone does not designate the entire range of mobile devices :\

nah, it's a minefield out there.

It's worse than the big screen browser wars ever were. The manufacturers seem to be able dictate everything at the moment. you'd of thought someone would of learnt from past mistakes by now.

I've got chumy with the guy who runs the mobile applications MSc here at the uni though so can always fire some questions his way for you if you ever need it.
