css transparency

Happy Friday everyone.

Here's todays conundrum:

Until now I've been using:
Code:
-moz-opacity: 0.whatever; filter: Alpha(Opacity=whatever);
to control transparency. However this doesn't work on a Mac, but I stumbled across this today:

http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile...098.css&page=0

and it appears to have transparent DIVs that work on a Mac.

The css file only mentions transparency a couple of times like this:
Code:
background: transparent url(footer_bg.gif) no-repeat top left;
so I just tried it out and it doesn't work, what am I missing?

TIA

dunnow. just a thought. however, i was playing with this earlier in the week. setting the background colour of a table (tabular data presentation) and then having two transparent png's (with differing transparency) as the bkg image for the the tr's classed as rowA and rowB.

however, i found that the colours which were finally displayed by ff and ie were very, very different.

It could be just a a solid image but faded out in photoshop so it appears to be semi-transparent.

Although it still doesn't explain the use of the word "transparency" in the background image style.

Maybe it's so that if gullible people have a look at the code they start to think there's a whole other way of making transparency work that they don't know about. The fools.

It actually means no bg color (but what you said is more exciting).
