<address>?</address>

I am about to add an address and contact details to a site and was wondering if it was correct to add the contact numbers within the address tags?

If not, what would be more suitable?

Cheers

HTML ADDRESS TAG

From what I understand, you are supposed to use the address tag as long as it encapsulates all of the contact info, not just the postal address.

So yes. Put all of the contact info in there.

I style it like this...

HTML Code:
<ul> <li> <address>Mr Dood<br /> 2 Fekem close<br /> London<br /> SW1 2BR</address> </li> <li class="tel">Tel: 012 456 8789</li> <li class="fax">Fax: 012 456 8789</li> <li class="email">Email: <a href="mailto:hello@dood.com">hello@dood.com</a></li> </ul>
Probably not 100% accurate but never mind, it allows for easier seperation of the address and other details.

Fwiw, the address element was intended to present contact info for the document's author/admin, rather than contact info for the site's other communications. i.e. it's a technical thing, rather than a commercial or general thing.

However, in practise, it's been adopted as the closest thing to a semantic element for general contact info.

In use, I tend to take a similar approach to Blackbox, though possibly using dl, dt, dd instead of ul, li.

You could always step over to microformats for your contact-information needs.

The W3C state it shouldn't be used for contact details unless it is used for an address within contact details. I assume it wasn't always like this...?

I've always used it specifically for street addresses. To me, that's where it seems the most semantically valid.

…which means you're probably not using it like [it was] designed [to be used].

No, the address goes in the address tag. Any other information I have is usually outside of the address.
