opt-in <meta> tag / HTTP header for IE8 standards mode

Thinking MS was finally taking standards seriously by getting IE to pass the ACID2 test, they've only gone and blown the doors off :/

I can't post a URL yet (first post here) but there's an article over at alistapart.com on how Microsoft have created an opt-in meta tag (or http header) for standards mode in IE8.

Oh, and Hi.

Hunch,

I did a search of all forums here, using several key words linked to ie8 and standards, to find any reference to this topic (without success by the look of your reply).

Perhaps you could provide a link?

What am I? Google?

No one was that interested in it apart from a short bit of sparring about whether it was a good thing or not.

There's a lot of debate about this right now. You can find an article over at WPDFD.com that attempts to outline version targeting in a neutral perspective.

For the most part though, I'm for version targeting... I just wish they would have implemented it differently. IE8 should behave as IE8 by default, rather than deprecating itself to IE7 by default. This seems backwards to me.

What MS needs to do is realize that most, if not all, of the sites they're worried about breaking are either
a) already updated because it's likely the top-dog at said company cares about the visitors who use Firefox, or
b) not worth worrying about, especially if they can't be bothered to updated 10 year old markup.
