ive tried getting the background color on the page correct in the css file instead of the html file and can't get it to work.

umm actually the code is quite atrocious. br tags everywhere and using <span class="h2"> to specify a heading? each of the navigation elements are in its own div???

and why is there "<style css>" in the external css file?

I dont know CSS coding much yet, but for all I know, the code in that page looks neat and organized.

Your coding seems neat to me. I think you should use external stylesheet instead. Your coding will be neater and easily readable.

uh, actually i did. look in the code on the top:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/main.css" />

Your page will look neater without these...
