Web designing Practices ?

Hello Guys,

I am a new member here. I have been doing website designing as a hobby but now want to take it to the next level of creating serious websites for commercial reasons. Till now I have been used to use "tables" to create websites. Just open the dreamweaver and create tables in the layout mode and place the contents in the cells. However, recently I came to know that using tables is not considered as a good practice to create websites. This made me get a bit confused and I thought its better to ask the web designing community about this.

Here are some of the questions currently in my mind:
1.) Why using tables is not considered as a good web designing practice?
2.) What are the other practices to design a website?

I might shoot more questions once I get answers for my these 2 questions.

Thanks & Regards,
Leon

Welcome to DT.

You've just opened up pandora's box my friend. Here are some useful reads;

http://www.webstandards.org/

Pay special attention to the title of the webstandards.org site. These will answer your 2 and all further questions better than most on this forum.

tables were never meant for layout purposes only for tabular data... so you could say they were misused by designers (but only because there was no alternatives).

CSS and the use of divs simplifies the layout process (at least it would if it wasnt for IE) and once you get stuck in you'll find it a much easier way to work.

Get yourself a book on designing to web standards (theres plenty on Amazon) and I'm positive you'll never go back
