Column ending short?

I have 2 columns or totally seperate data in my xHTML file.

1. Content

2. Menu

Content is longer and therefore defining the length of the page, the menu is ending prior to that.

How can I get the "background" of the menu column to continue to the bottom of the page? I need it to allow for longer and shorter content columns based on the page, so I can't just define "height"

This is probably SUCH a noob question, but I have no clue how to even search for the answer.

Nope, and nope.

The first one tells me it is going to address that problem, but I can't find it, and the second link shows many examples that all exibit the problem I am having.

Thank you very much for trying though, I really appreciate you putting your time and attention to my problem.

sh1t, I can use that method, my site is almost done, and that will entail starting over from the beginning. I guess I will just have to do without. It really does not detract THAT much from the site This is my first full CSS layout and I will commit seppaku if I have to scrap it.

Thank you for your attempt, now I know when starting my next site!

There is one way but it's more of a trick then it is a actual method.

Basically what you do is you add a background image to the main container (the one that incases both the content and the menu) and tile it vertically and it'll seem as if the left area keeps continuing all the way down.

agreed, faux columns is the best way to do it - if you have one overall container div then bang the fauxcolumn image in that one - if not create a div wrapper and use it for that - its helpful to wrap elements in one div with page id's and a generic class - then they can be used for contextual menus / page specfic data if you want too

Agreed, but in this case it is too late for a retro fit. We will just call this a "lesson learned" for future useage.
