Amp characters not working on mobile devices

Hi all,

I am testing a website on my Nokia 9500, which uses Opera as a browser and runs Symbian 60 as OS.

I just noticed that, when using amp characters for dashes () and colons (:), they simply don't show up in the browser, so "three-dimensional" becomes "threedimensional" and so forth.

I have tried not specifying a font family for the text, leaving it to the device, but I had no luck.

Any ideas?

Thank you.

Hi Weldo,

Could yuo please elaborate? Do you mean that writing "three-dimensional" or "Donald Duck: a duck without underwear" is valid xhtml?
Thank you.

(Update: My page validates even without amp characters. But I think I read somewhere it's a good practice to use them. Am I quite mistaken here?)

I only use special characters where validation fails (or where Firefox throws up a '?'), so am happy to use regular chartacters like hyphens, colons etc all day long.

You may be correct in using special charcters throughout - it may be good practice - but it also sounds like you've given yourself an unneccessary problem in this instance .... ?

- won't fail, but it's incorrect in a typographic sense (it's a minus sign), as is ' which is not an apostrophe

Right and " isn't a proper quote mark.
