How do I implement a forum onto a website?
Hello all! New here to "designerstalk" but I look forward to some nitty gritty talk with others like myself. So here is my question: I'm building a website for a client of mine and he;s asked me to implement a free forum/ message board on there. The thing is... I know it "can be done" but I'm clueless on where to start. There's so many options it seems. All I know is that I want it to be part of the same domain name and have customizable options so I can make the look-and-feel consistent with the rest of the website. Anybody have experience with forums and/ or willing to point me in right direction? |

One word - PHPBB (phpBB • Creating Communities Worldwide) Alright, so it's technically several words, and that's not really a word anyway, but it should be more than good enough for your needs. There's other forum software out there too if you want to experiment - vBulletin, Simple Machines and more. |

From my experience, MyBB is the easiest to work with.. and it's free. From the frontend (that's easy as hell to tweak), to the simplistic administration, I think your client will be happy. Sorry, I'm not a fanboy, promise. I just found MyBB, and I took a liking to it. haha. |

vBulletin all the way man. it is pretty straight forward to set up with extensive instructions etc. and completely customisable once it is set up. you can input your own html for the header and navbar and can change all the colours/images in the site to make it fit into your site seamlessly. it does cost £100 though. |

Okay, I'm gonna give this phpBB thing a try. It sounds (and looks) promising. Unless somebody wants to stop me "now". I would have gone with vBulletin as I've heard alot of good things but I'm trying to go the free route here. Since I'm a newbie. But anyways... I'm looking over these install instructions - so I assume I need to create and setup a MySQL database first, right? Last edited by sushix3 : 05-07-2009 at 05:00. |
