E-commerce?

What are some of the more popular ecommerce sollutions out there. I see osCommerce mentioned. How reliable is that? I have it installed, and I've been playing with it. I am pretty new to PHP, but it seems fairly easy to figure out. Are there any other ones out there worth checking out - free or not?

Also, has anyone heard of or used iHTML? The local hosting company has that available. I was just wondering if it a good package to learn?

Thanks for an info!

iHTML was dicussed over on the other forum recently and the general reaction was why not just use PHP or ASP (or one of the other more mature server-side scripting languages). Perhaps there are particular benefits, but none were forthcoming when i had a quick look at their site - seems like a 'me too' kinda deal, except perhaps targeted more at beginners than the others..

A plethora of information.

Go with oscommerce, loads of plugins for it, easy to customise, lots of help if you get stuck.

Yeah, I know. Then again, if it were really that good i'm sure more folk would have piped up. Try starting a thread asking if PHP is decent..

Yes I can't justify learning a new language right now. osCommerce has a more features than I really need right now. It would be great if they had a light version... with just a database and shopping cart.

OSCommerce is the dogs dangly bollocks! I recommend it totally and completely despite the bloated code and homosexual OSC forum admins (briefly I redrew someones header for them, took all of 3 minutes... someone said, wow to do it that fast you must be a professional designer to which I replied, yes- i am... butt bandit admin decided that I was advertising myself by doing this and deleted my posts - wanker!).

OSC is really as big as you want it to be... I made this with 2000+ products and loads of stuff going on and this, (which is still very early stages), with zero products and fuck all going on.

OSC is soooo customizable, the PHP is easy to get into, (like yo momma - sorry, too much rum and coke tonight after the tornado warning was over - state of emergency was declared by harrisburg which is 30 miles up the road - and by my pants!) there are contributions to do pretty much anything you want (one of really popular ones is by me which is actually soooo fucking simple - I called it ''dead easy center thingy'' cos so many n00bs couldn't work out how to center a page - aww bwess da ickle n00bs).

You're calling people "noobs" when you're producing sites using table-based layouts and an off-the-shelf commerce system? I'm seriously not meaning to put you down here, as each to their own and all that, but i'd reconsider the attitude of thinking you're better than someone just because they're new to the subject.

n00bs indicates that they are new to something so hardly putting someone down.

I've been using tables to layout my sites for 8 years so I don't think that could make me a n00b now could it? How long have you been in the business?

As for off-the-shelf eCommerce system I adapted OSC to my own needs, and added my own, albeit shit, contribution to the project - before creating 100% of the images used - hardly the case of someone just installing and being done now is it? The software being perfect for my requirements I'd have been a fool to write my own back-end to do exactly the same thing.

In what way do I indicate that I think I'm better than someone else?

Can't comment on your own work as your portfolio link doesn't work.

Thanks for the info. I'm from Altoona, PA by the way. I'm fairly new to PHP, but I have developed stuff in ASP before. The osCommerce seems real easy to modify. You can comment out most of the stuff you don't want as well.
