Country Identifier

Hi,

Does anyone know where to find a country identifier script. So for example, someone in Japan can view a site differently than someone in Mexico.

it is possible through IP redirection... but not very reliable. Moral of the story... just do what everyone else does - that is, have a flag or something the user can select, then save a cookie to their computer that saves their language settings.

How can I find a script that does the cookie?

I'm not sure what your exact requirements are but if you need to simply show content in another language then also take a look at the "Accept-Language" header sent from the user-agent.

In certain circumstances it would be better than IP Geolocation which often changes on a monthly basis and to keep the results up to date would usually require a subscription to a dedicated service such as ip2location.com

Just a thought.

That's a pretty good thought actually. I use an English browser even though I'm not in an English land, and I'm sure that most people in the world are using a browser in their native tongue.

That's my thinking entirely, it might take a bit of looking into but it's something I want to explore.

We've been Geolocating here lately to do our multilingual content but in the long term it's just not easily maintainable and reliable. Although we do allow the user to change the website language manually if they want to at any point.

You definitely have to make the language switcher accessible. It sucks having to dig around a page when you don't know the language of what you are reading.

Some Japanese sites have the word 'English' written in Japanese (英語) which kind of defeats the purpose

Maybe its just for Japanese speakers to practice their English skills
Just wondering, has Kanji been simplified like PRC Mandarin characters? Like 語 -> 语

Nope. We use the first one in Japanese.

Put up a landing page where they select the flag. It's the most accurate method...though that language picker thing looks really neat
