It's a trend that was really ampd with Indexhibit and Indxr. Even if you decide you want a very simple basic, minimal site, there should be no reason to structure your site like everyone else's. You can steer away from the left edge navigation and content right next to it, without adding gradients, shadows lalalala. Don't take my site as an example(is kinda shit) I had to put something up, but I have been brainstorming my actual site design for awhile. Keeping in mind ALA's realingner's article. |

Yes I will abuse the hell out of white background portfolio sites. And yes, my links are fubar because I haven't gathered all my material together. I like to play hide and seek on my computer with my work. Anyway, time to head out for the day. Later beautiful people! |

a portfolio site that is plain and simple means that the person is too busy with commercial work to do his own unpaid work. A design that looks amazing that most people will rave about means that he has no work coming in. Now you have to ask yourself, if someone has no work then that must mean they are not very good? So you go for the popular person who everyone wants. War is Gods way of teaching Americans Geography

Your logic is flawed. If their website is good enough to be good, then their work *should* be good as well. Also you're assuming that someone with an amazing website doesn't get any work. That doesn't make any sense at all |

I'm on the fence on this one. Do what you want I say. It's your own site, so it should reflect your commercial personality to some degree. But don't make it too complicated. My flat mate got quite a few job offers because he made a really cool flash site, lots of bells and whistles. Really nice and nothing like I'd ever seen before, but looking at his work frustrated me, it all seemed too small. But on the other hand, minimilistic sites can be really boring, especially when they look like every other one. I don't like the new Dstrukt site, for instance. I've noticed he's used a tool called INDXR to do it, and so have a load of other people, and all the sites have the same feel to them. Every INDXR site I looked at now makes me cringe. And they are slow as shit. There are opposite ends of the spectrum, and neither is right or wrong. Take a look at the contrast in these 2 for example: Have a shwayday Thibaud EDIT Quote:
