new to web design

Well the other night (a while now actually but exams have gotten in the way, you know how it is) I decided to make a site, no reason, no idea what was going in it, I just did it. The catastrophic result was this:

i know its not good, I didn't expect it to be, but I was wondering if anyone could think of any tips to improve it or hadany ideas for content I could include.

Whilst designing this site (harr) I paid no attention to colour schemes so if it not aesthetically pleasing, fuck off, I've got no ads or important messages, therefore I don't need your traffic.

Isn't that a banner-ad at the bottom of the page?

Anyway .. your graphics (header, buttons..) are horribly aliased (jaggy), and in the case of the buttons, completely unnecessary (CSS could have been used here, but as you're learning I can understand why you've used graphics).

There's not too much to say about it really, move on, make another site, then another and some more .. learn how to write markup (HTML / XHTML) to W3C standards, don't use a WYSIWYG editor (e.g. Frontpage / Dreamweaver) and learn CSS.

Good luck

I wondered how long it would take someone to notice th contradiction. I put the google ad there to see if I could make $0.0001 as a novelty, I haven't yet

Over the summer I'm going to learn as much as I can, any top tips for a newb?

www.alistapart.com
www.w3.org
www.glish.com/css/

Install copies of Mozilla (www.mozilla.org) and Opera (www.opera.com) so you can check how your pages look in other more standards compliant browsers.

One technique I (and many others) use is to save copies of pages on my hard disk so I can then look at the code to see how it was put together. I find Opera's 'Save with images as...' works best for this.

Hi, Apoggy. It's not bad for a beginning! My advice - look, look, look at sites you like. Write down why you like them if you want. You'll start to develop your own visual skills - and then you'll want to learn the code to make them happen. A site that I like to surf is here: http://www.csszengarden.com. It's all about designing with style sheets, but just going there to view the sites is inspiring.

Happy designing!
