School's out for summer...

...(almost) and I wanna try get some design work to cut down the student loans next year (or maybe just to go on holiday!).

My one and only idea so far is to find some local businesses in need of a redesign (read: with shite sites), do 'em a mock up and pitch myself.

What do you think? Any other ideas/suggestions!?

Jamie

Thats a good way, another way to get some work is from various forums - the pay is not brilliant tho. See yaxay.com webhostingtalk.com etc.
Maybe sign up with an agency for freelance work ?
Sites like scriptlance.com - again the pay is not great from these type of sites.

Cheers for the reply Oli. I'll check the forums out but will probably end up going local.

Yeah when I was freelance I found the easiest way to get work was to find local companies with crap websites and do a 2 hour job (at the computer, maybe a few hrs thinking) flat proof. Then mail them the JPEG (explaining i own it until they sign for it just incase ).

9 / 10 times they came straight back to me stunned as they didn't think their site could look that good.

Go for it mate!

Another good way is to find local bands, many teens guys have bands, and they all think their band will skyrocket, help them along by making them a site, and get paid for it too. [the bands I do sites for are actually good bands, going places, I hope ]

Cheers for the ideas guys...my life seems to have become more hectic since the end of term for some reason. I'm gonna hopefully get some mock ups "mocked up!" over the next week.

I'll keep you posted.

Blah blah blah...I only WISH I still had summer/spring/winter vacations. Lucky lucky lucky.

...furiously jealous.

Anyhoo, some ideas are (not all computer related):

1) a wild summer party to kick things off. In a drunken haze, you may have the idea that puts all others to shame
2) Try #1 again.
3) (OK, here's the serious one) I'll contact you if I have any work overflow. I could use some fresh/new looks for some designs for the hotel (usually templated) websites we do. Would you release all rights to a .PSD for the right price?

OH yeah, any samples of work you've done would be great to see. Link 'em up!

Could some one help me out? I want to approach a few of the local businesses, but I don't know how I would go about doing this. I know HOW, but I don't know what to say, I don't know how I can get them to think they need a site!

Could one of you help me?

Interviews and deals are not based on impulse most of the time, you need to plan what to say at first. Sounds daft, but it works. :spiny: Don't always assume they wan't to listen to you, give a good arguement to why they should too.

Send a print off of their existing website next to your redesign with a cover letter introducing yourself, saying something on the lines of you'd seen their site was looking a bit tired and you thought the redesign would better better illustrate the ethos of their business or enhance their web presence etc etc - this is all thinking off the top of my head...no doubt there are better ways of putting it.

®oto - thanks for the offer but graphical templating isn't really my thing...at least at the moment while I have the choice.

Totally cool...I just thought if you were looking for work and wanted to make some cool graphics, we can always use new looks. Good luck in whatever you end up doing for summer work.
