Need help with javascript....

Hey,

What I am looking for is quite complicated but I will try to expain it as well as I can.

I am trying to create a new site but want to include a group of items which when clicked on will show more info at the top of the page.

There will be 8 small thumbnails of different items and when someone clicks on one, I want it to become highlighted and above these items it will display the whole image along with some info that can be retrieved from the database.

Along side this will be a sign up box where people can put in a desired username and when they click 'Go', it will take them to the registration screen. I need the item that they selected to also be saved in the database along with their registration details.

I hope I have made sense to you all and I hope that there is someone who can advise me on how to do this.

PS: I am using dreamweaver CS3 if that helps.

Thanks in advance,

Your editor doesn't matter.

That's more than JavaScript. What you've asked requires learning JavaScript, a server-side programming language (like PHP), and a database like MySQL. This is out of the scope of a thread. Buy some books, read them, practice for a year or two.

Thanks for your reply. I am however familiar with PHP and MYSQL.

It is only javascript that I am not too sure about. Is this easy to learn and is it possible to get a script for what I want?

Thanks

To get specific help we'll need specific information. Do you have an example site that does what you want?

In general I suggest picking a framework (e.g., Mootools, JQuery, Prototype/Scriptaculous) and then searching for modules built upon it that satisfy your requirements. You may have to tweak some stuff to suit your needs or perhaps tweak your requirements to suit the scripts if you're not too comfortable dealing with advanced JavaScript.

Is JavaScript easy? It can be as complex as the requirements warrant. Check the source of any of those frameworks - that will give you an idea of where JavaScript can take you.

The structure of javacript can be difficult if you have never worked with object oriented programming (OOP). It's different in that rather than calling a function and passing it a variable, you create an object, and call the function off the object. If that makes no sense, then it is going to take a while to figure out exactly how it works. But once you do, it's pretty straightforward, and actually fairly easy to use. I have ended up using a lot of OOP in PHP as well by defining classes, because I like the functionality of it.

As for your initial problem, well there is nothing mind-blowingly difficult in there, but nor is it particularly easy. It will take a good solid grasp of javascript to get it working.
