Charge less for inclusion in Portfolio

Hi, Hope you can help me out with this one...
Would you ever charge less for a website that you are creating for a client if you are going to include it in you online portfolio! Just something I thought of....

Absolutely not. I always state in my contracts that I reserve the right to include all work within my portfolio.

Ditto seen.to

It's standard practice to reserve the right to use the site or images of it for self-promotional purposes, particularly via your portfolio of work.

The only time(s) you should give a 'discount', is if the project has only a reduced (or no) budget, but would serve to fill a significant gap in your portfolio, which you'd like to see filled - i.e. it's a type of site which you wish to have in your folio or it gives you free rein to be more in (creative) control than you typically get to be for an applied/commissioned piece.

…or mates' rates, but never let mates take the pi** and don't let them forget that you're doing them a favour by dropping your usual price.

People have been trying to get free websites on the grounds that "it'd be great for your portfolio" ever since the web started. It's a long-running joke, albeit one that's not particularly funny.

It goes in portfolio anyway. Charge more for not putting it in.

yeah i agree. if you designed the site you can display it in your portfolio. thats what its for.

however if the client for some reason does not want the work to be included in your portfolio specifically (very rare) i don't think that's reason to charge more.

if you want to protect yourself legally, then include it in the contract as mentioned already.

+edit+ btw i loved the animation.. "give me a car free"

Very good animation, made me laugh alot!

I always mention that I may or may not include their site in my portfolio, some clients request not to be included and that's fine - nothing extra!
