Help!!....Please!!
Ok so I have a domain in my name. I established a server via MS Office Live basic edition and decided those stupid free templates weren't for me. So I heard from Chris Pirillos blog that Drupal was the thing to use. Now I hear Drupal is for things like MySQL and PHP (however Drupal 7 will be specific PHP if I'm not mistaken). I downloaded Drupal 6 and quite frankly, I don't know what to do. I have all the files downloaded and in an archive thing (like winzip but it's something else). What do I do? Should I re-install it to a specific root file? Should I extract it from the archive? I'm probably the biggest "noob" on this website when it comes to web design. Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I read the faqs and such on Drupal.org but still don't quite grasp the idea of what I'm supposed to do. They need (if they don't already have) a Drupal for dummies....(Million dollar idea for those of you who have time to write it up and submit it to the company) Thanks! -Matt |

If you don't even know what PHP and MySQL are then Drupal is going to be way, way out of your league. You probably downloaded a tarball of it, so you'll need an archive application that supports .tar.gz (7zip comes to mind). Then you need to follow the Drupal installation instructions (unzip to root, create a database, etc). Since when does Office do any server stuff? Is it just a dumbed-down IIS? Apache is better anyway. There are several good Drupal books. Pro Drupal Development comes to mind. However, this assumes at least a working knowledge of PHP/MySQL programming. It's not something you can just sit down and "do" if you don't know what you're doing. You have to learn HTML and CSS first. JavaScript/DOM would be handy also. Then you have to learn PHP and MySQL. Then you can learn Drupal. Find good advice in the beginners web design thread.

I'm trying to make a gaming website. Not for actual games but more for coverage (think Gamespot, ign type). The problem with those sites is they're owned by larger companies thus having more of a "bind" on the people who contribute to the site (feedback, etc). I want to make somewhat of a "open" website where people can contribute their opinions and ideas about games with no restraints. I want to set up a forum and a main "Latest News" type page. |

How would you even moderate accurate vs inaccurate postings? Each entry start of with some flashy image "So.. Rumor has it: " $post_goes_here. Seems like an interesting concept although tough since there's many sites/blogs out there devoted to gaming: Kotaku, IGN and Gamespot, who royally doesn't deserve the attention that they get. |

If it's a wiki, then consider using a wiki for it. Drupal isn't a bad choice, but it's complicated and requires a lot of customization and knowledge. Web development (at the level of Gamestop and such) is a professional enterprise - not a hobby. WikiPedia uses MediaWiki. Find good advice in the beginners web design thread.

i would definitely recommend staying away from drupal unless you know your php. Its powerful but only to the people that can handle the technical aspects. Wordpress or mediawiki would be a much better choice...id lean more towards wordpress but its whatever you prefer |
