"textue" on websites - design tips please
I'm working on a website design right now. I'm not a web designer per se, so excuse my naivety... The project manager feels like there should be more "texture" on the web pages. I've been using mostly solid colours with some subtle gradients here and there. I wonder what she means... When it comes to putting "texture" on websites, what are the options? It seems to me that a solid block of colour would make sense behind html text. Are subtle patterns used? When it comes to print, texture makes sense to me, but with the web I feel like I'm a bit lost. I guess at this point I'm looking for simple tips to add texture to a flat looking webpage. Thanks. |

I think you are right by using solid colors, especially behind text. A website design should be simple. Maybe you can add a nice image to the top of the website that creates a fresh look (water, fruit, etc.). But I think you should not use to much textures / repeating patterns. just my 2 cents |

It sounds like she is looking for something that has some non-crisp lines and more detail. A texture doesn't have to no be a solid background. It could simply be how you approach the edges of the shape you are working with. For example look at the page background on visionsxpressed.com. It's solid but has a ragged edge. Sometimes an interesting or vibrant body background can make your solid page designs pop. squidfingers.com has some cool patterns that you might be able to use with your design. Just some ideas. |

A great way to make you page stand out and give it a more textured look is to bevel different items. It kinda gives it a 3D look. Take a look at my site and you'll see what I'm talking about. goodrichlogos.com |
