Starting off with Drupal

For a client of mine i am designing and building a website which includes the following parts:
- some pages about the company
- a messageboard
- a photo gallery
- a blog-like news section

Now, for this website I am gonna use the CMS platform Drupal, since the client wishes to update the pages themselves. So the only thing i will need to do is make the design (already done and finished) and build it all up into a working CMS based website.
Though, this is the first time i am going to make a website myself all based on the Drupal CMS. Now can someone help me along to get started getting this thing off the ground with it's own 'theme'?
I have found something on the Google results that said that I first have to build the main website into 'just' CSS and HTML pages and from there start theming it.
But some more help and some other point of views would be helpful as well.

Drupal isn't child's play. I hope you aren't expecting to be done this week (or next).

Check out the book "Pro Drupal Development" (I think). I have it and have read most of it, but never ended up using Drupal afterall.

Well, to start with for the very first beginning i just need to know how i can seperate the menu's that's on the top of the page and it's secundaries by putting the secundaries in the left sidebar. On default the secundaries will be next to or just below the Main items, but i want them to be split up into the left sidebar.

On the drupal.org forum they already pointed me to some modules (drupal_org / node / 237443) i can include into the website, but these seem to be outdated. I already requested an update for these, but so far still no response on that.

Maybe someone here can help me by helping me updating these modules for 6.x Drupal core or helping me to some other up-to-date module that does the same thing?

Yay for my first post. Ok for your Drupal situation.

xxx.gomediazine.com/tutorials/create-a-killer-band-site-in-drupal-part-1-design/

Best tutorial for drupal. It shows you how to design, code, and then theme your website for drupal.

O and just finished the tutorial...my one problem with it is that it involves illustrator...imo an inferior program for webdesign because of the resources it takes from your computer.
