Users and Thanks Tomson

You might have all seen i started a thread asking you guys to have look around www.car-finance.net and give me some feed back. Tomson came back with the obvious comment "I take it you've done user testing....". Easy answer, no. Long story short the site is for a company with in our group and the MD won't allow the time / budget for user testing (hmm??). After showing them Tomson's comment they agreed!! Thanks mate!

So I just spent the last 4hrs with average Jo's user testing the site. Some really cool and interesting feed back. Basically I set them 5 tasks to do within the site and they went about it on their own little paths. Its very hard not being able to scream "THE QUOTE BUTTON IS DOWN THERE!!". I just sat there taking my notes quietly.

The good thing is nobaody didnt manage to complete the task, but I need to make some really big changes to make things swifter. I'll keep you all posted when i've made the changes and retested them

Taking it in good spirit. Think I'd be pissed off if the boss wouldn't listen to me, but then acted straight away on the comments of some bloke on a forum.

And no 'your boss is some bloke on a forum' comments. Thanks

Nah i think cos its coming from someone out side the company they listen. Bit annoying for the developers really cos they're producing a multi million £ app and the wont even allow enough test time for that!

I just had task sheets and the back "Logo Design That Works".

Some fellow course mates and myself completed some usability testing for a piece of coursework.

Our brief was to pitch for the redesign of Surfers Against Sewage website with certain goals in mind. Here is their site:
http://www.sas.org.uk/

We set about completing quite a simple usability test, giving normal users tasks to do and asking them to rate each task for ease of completion. Whilst they did this, we timed how long the task took them and the number of page clicks required (without them seeing).

The results were really interesting and we managed to define some clear areas that needed improvement, which is probably why we got the highest mark for the pitch.

Although most people rated the tasks as quite easy, the number of clicks and time taken to complete the task were more evidence towards the improvements.

Here is our pitch design:
http://www.pixelsumo.com/storage/sas/

Although there are improvements in certain areas of usability, the web designers of the SAS site haven't implemented any of the small changes to key pages that would significantly improve their sales and membership signups. It?s crazy really, especially as they have students working on these projects for free. I don't believe SAS ever saw the usability report or pitch designs though, which is a shame.

I have my new portfolio site launching 1st May, which will include the usability improvements list, results from the tests and the forms we made to do the testing, for people to download and use if they wish.

If anyone would like a copy of these testing forms before hand, get in touch with me.
