Mailing List vs Membership Site (ie Fan Club) for performing artist

Hi, I'm creating a website for a performing artist and am debating whether I should simply put a mailing list signup form on the home page so that he can build a list of "fans" to who he can send out updates....OR....build a membership site where signing up actually gives "fans" a unique login for a restricted access section of the site where exclusive content exists for fans only. (the membership would be free at this moment)

Any ideas on pros and cons of each option, and what I would need to keep in mind while designing/developing?

mailing lists are obnoxious. if i wanted current info, i'd check their site.

most lists i've been on the past are either too content heavy and a waste of time to read through or have small blog-like updates which i could care less about and i end up unsubscribing right quick.
