I have an osCommerce site to start in a few weeks. I've played around with it before but this will be the first full site I've created using it.

Anyone got any tips, resources for helping with modifications etc...

my old biz partner is setting up a shop using oscommerce - looking good so far : http://www.atlarge-nutrition.com/store/index.php - it's quite a tidy bit of software once you get the hang of it.

Dont forget the user contributions on the Oscommerce site itself - theres loads of extra modules and payments systems etc. I had to integrate with Protx which was fairly easy really.

I'd agree, osCommerce is a fantastic piece of kit! Designed THIS SITE around the osCommerce engine earlier this year for my girlfriend (the things you do for love, eh ??). Once you get the hang of how it works (which can take a while) it's fairly easy to customise.

Some of the mods I'd look out for are:

• Mo Pics (allows more than 1 pic in your products
  
  Members Discount (great for family and friend discount options)
  
  WorldPay 4.0 (UK-based credit card gateway)

And if you know a bit of PHP, adding your own features to it shouldn't be too hard either. I build an automated email reminder service that sends emails to customers to remind them of events they choose, complete with links to products on the sites. It doesn't really adhere to the osCommerce way of coding (functions etc) but I'm just getting to grips with PHP, so just to get it working was enough for me!!

All the best with it, and like the others say, make good use of the osCommerce forums out there: I found them a God-send at times!!

Thanks mate! A lot of LONG, LONG nights went into building it (launched it at 5am one Saturday morning after an all-night session!!) and I'm pleased with how it turned out. Seems to be working too: we've had orders from Northern Ireland (where we're based), the Republic of Ireland and England, as well as contact from businesses in the US and Australia.

Just goes to show the internet is a great place to sell things, and it's sent my brain working overtime trying to find something I could sell on the web to earn some pocket money!!
