Have you checked out the freeware/shareware SMS apps available at VersionTracker?
There are a range available now that enable you to send 'em straight from your desktop.

i'm friends with the guy who coded fonetastic, but I think it was sold recently so the policies may have changed. it used to be the sms was free, but they reserved the right to use/sell the email addy you signed up with .. so use a hotmail/spam account if you have one
