I don't anymore. There can't be too many machines still out there surfing the web with just using 256 colours can there?

Yeah thinking about I probably do that too. I guess it's just easy to pick from the 216 colours in the palette when you're at the initial design stages.

yeh i still use them as a starting point, it often makes things easier later on when the design gets more complex

I think the answer is yes and no - ... imagine if it's a site for a charity organisation: it would be handy if it could be viewed on the maybe not most up to date computers...? Then you'll go back to basics, eh?

nah, dropped them a while ago the web safe colours were just too restricting. You couldn't use trendy 'Gap' colours if you stuck to your web safe options

Only really use them for Accessability where needed, other than that it's 16million+ all the way! I based this decision on the fact that most people update their PC's?monitors ever 4 years so by now, a huge majority are on 17" monitors using 1024x768 which can obviously display in more than 256 colours!

I use the websafe palette for the parts of my site I wouldn't want to be ruined by someone viewing with an old monitor.

For most images though, especially photographs, there's no way you can restrict the palette that much.

Oh, and a lot of people do have good monitors, just as a lot of people have good computers. But that doesn't mean that they use them well - quite the contrary. I've been dismayed to see some people running their computer at 600x480 with 256 colours even though they have good eyesight and hence no excuse.

There's no accounting for some people, but there's little chance of them caring when they come across a page that looks funny.
