Expression Engine - Resources

I've been up to my neck in EE all week. Started off slow but thanks to a little help and a lot of sweat I have got to grips with the very basics. I now love the system - takes a while for the uninitiated to get it working but it looks like it will be well worth it.

Anyway - thought it'd be useful to set up a thread to refer us to the best links/demos/resources/galleries and general EE geekiness.

Starting at the Top:

Looky here: ExpressionEngine - Publish Your Universe!
Home Page | Load-balanced Web Hosting for the Dynamic Web | EngineHosting - if the software is anyting to go by, then go buy!

Official Docs;

ExpressionEngine Documentation

Getting Started: Installation

Take a read of al this: Installation Instructions – ExpressionEngine Documentation

Then watch this: Installing ExpressionEngine | Video Tutorials | ExpressionEngine

This is great if you have no clue how the system works - gets you off and running without too much of a problem

My first tip would be this - by default many (well mine at least) web hosts assign a new Mysql database the same DB name as the DB username...

Jambor-ee

It's only fair at this point that we direct a little link love to smallbeers site. So far it's looking great mate. Jambor-ee - Celebrating ExpressionEngine.

Some of the best EE's are here: The Jambor-ee Showcase | Showcasing sites built with ExpressionEngine

I spent about 35 hours trying to understand EE before I threw in the towel. I still suspect that it's an exceptionally powerful platform, but I just couldn't wrap my head around it and needed to get down to business.

During my explorations, one of the EllisLabs folks sent me a presentation: http://pat-oneill.com/docs/EE_Intro.pdf

Simon Rudkin did a series of guest posts on Colly's blog a while back which were full of useful stuff. He's playing with his blog atm so I can't seem to link to the category directly but go here (CollyLogic: CategoriColly) and look under the "Guest Author" header.

In fact there's probably some useful stuff by Colly himself (I better say that seeing as he will check his referrals) under the EE heading.

here, you EE gurus, - is there a easy function to add video (ie upload directly to the site) and tag video content like you can with youtube?

Haha random question I know, but would help me figure something out

yes - you can upload any file - look under:

CP Home › Admin › Weblog Administration › File Upload Preferences

You can then specify: remote destination, mime type, max file size and other useful things like what code to wrap you file in. Then, when you are publishing the weblog - click the upload button - and select your file upload settings... and you're away.

Why would someone choose EE over packages like Drupal? I'm just curious, as I've never used EE before. Are there any great features which sets it apart from other CMSs?

Hmm, I'm looking around for a CMS to resell to my clients, $250 each time I get a web-build seems a good price, I really am sick of looking into it right now now tho, save me the 30 day demo pls.

Whats the interface like - Easy to use?
Do you think I'd be able to re-brand it?
Is there a gallery included (or module available?)

Cheers

J

Yes, but like all new software it takes a while to get your bearings.

You can hack the code, use a theme, build your own theme or the greater alternative is to house the control panel within the site itself. Seen that done to great effect.

Yep - gallery module comes as standard with the pro version - or you can set it up to upload & resize images without the module.

I'd like to see some off the shelf numbers too - so I can hack from experience.

how can you upload multiple files to a weblog and have em stored? The EE way is very confusing for the non tech users as they have to upload a file and then put it in a field (yes, it makes sense from the point of view that you're putting the reference to a file in a table column, but the users dont care)

I'm currently testing out (just installed) EE but am leaning towards MODx. EE appeals to me so I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. Thanks

I was using MODx quite long and I was very pleased, but when found EE I was totaly fascinated! I'm a graphic/web designer, not a programmer and I've always been frustradet towards programming. The flexibility of EE gave me "wings" and now I'm able to build dynamic sites for my clinets entirely by myself. So don't pass by EE

Uhm, I'm not allowed to post URL's, because I don't have enough posts, therefore I can't post my EE resources

I played some more with this today. Only the core version. Is it worth paying for a commercial license?

Can the free core version be used for client sites?

If I wanted to do a basic layout with a flash header is it easy enough to embed flash?

Thanks all.
