Lightbox vs. Slimbox // Go on, enlighten me?

Hi guys,

I just wanted peoples opinions on the whole ajax gallery phenomenon,

my personal fave is Lightbox2 and upon recently finding Slimbox (finally a size efficient version) i was pretty happy... then i realised its buggy in Safari 2.0 and a few other browsers..

anyone care to enlighten me with other fantastic gallery related scripts?

I've only used Lightbox.

And they're not Ajax.

As they are built on the mootools library, I'm sure they could be considered as Ajax-driven.

Doesn't Ajax imply a communication with the server? Or am I completely misunderstanding "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML"?

Javascript effects aren't AJAX. AJAX is basically when the site can update it's content without refreshing the whole page.

Yea but both scripts effectively do that.

Lightbox is based on script.aculo.us and slimbox is based on mootools.

They are both essentially the same thing just based on different libraries.

No, they are not AJAX they are simply unobtrusive javascripts. AJAX script update the page asynchronously by requesting some sort of information(usually XML) from the server after the initial page request. The above mentioned script do not do that.

I didn't actually know the difference, i assumed if it the content updated without the page changing then it could be considered ajax. However I am far from 1337 with my programming skills (hence the post).
