Hey mihir, webdesign is kinda broad so if you want to learn , i say start with a good CMS like joomla -> joomla.org, and try editing the PHP and CSS from the template ! as soon as you understand that you can easily build standard websites ! then the fancy extra's come along like java and flash or ajax to make your website the best there is ! best is to just start and every time you cant figure out what to do just ask so you will learning and making atthe same time |

Ok that is crap advice. I dont know why you would tell someone to start by trying to use joomla, it takes a lot more effort to get a joomla site looking half decent. If you want to get into web design then you need to learn about HTML and CSS, accessability, grid layouts, typography, and graphic design to make the front-end of the site. For any server side stuff like contact forms, databases, content management you need to learn PHP and ASP. But to begin with you find using free scripts may help and for CMS just use a blog like wordpress. Just google the terms I have highlighted in bold and you will find a lot of useful tutorials and guides. Theres a lot to learn and will take some time before you make great websites. Please can somebody change my username?

well i think its better to start with one base system to begin working from , Lmclaney cleary thinks its better to start with frontend basics . both will do the job and lmclaneys way will be a better start for Good designing , but when you need a little faster results then my approach is better and faster to understand |

w3schools.com should help you in learning the basic tags etc that are involved with the various aspects of web design. I use this site frequently and the information isn't too overboard for a beginner. Good luck with the web design |

Going with a CMS when you know nothing doesn't help you learn anything, except how to use a CMS as a crutch. Just my opinion though. Read everything on A List Apart: A List Apart , and HTML and CSS Tutorials, References, and Articles | HTML Dog and you should be on your way to understand the how and why of web design and development. Once you know enough you can then make an educated decision about using a CMS. If you go the CMS road I would suggest Wordpress. I only use it for it's original purpose (BLOG) and it fits wonderfully into the sites I create. |

I like the GOOGLE advice, to be honest people will find there own ways to learn what they want to learn there are too many niches in webdesign to give a shortlist. You know what you want to learn, type it in Google first, if you cant find it then ask here...all we do if we don't know and answer is Cut and Paste...? Good Luck Mihir Any Specific questions while you on your quest give us a shout - AFTER you've googled. J |

I would recommend you use notepad or some other simple text based editor. Aviod using dreamweaver or frontpage, basically these appliacation are wirting code for you, using note pad will help you to learn the coding yourself which is important when you start coding more technical dynamic sites. I use the following technologies at present: PHP 5 - programming language Mysql Server - database application Javascript - programming language XML - structured file for storing cross platform data AJAX - combination of Javascript and XML I use Linux based hosting to run website applications. regards p shah - dcpweb.co.uk |

Ok i think you should learn how to design using tables inside and out ok, once you have learnt to get sites working with tables you can swap to div/css I learnt tables(which isnt much help for me now) but when i saw what i could do with div tags i knew exactly why i didnt need to use tables. |
