Multiple IE's
i just installed the multiple ie software from trendsoft's website. I've seen other posts where people use this on here. I was wondering if it is truely an IE6 install. when i view the browser info from the help menu, it says IE6 but the version is 7.xxx. So am i really using IE6, and if so will IE6 still update as if it was my only browser? thanks |

Ok, so the way it works is that you do have multiple ie engines, so you can preview the differences between the browsers. However, targetted css for ie 5.5, 6, 7 etc wont work properly, because even though you could be using your installed version of the ie6 engine, it will identify itself as ie7, and thus pick up the ie7 targetted css. Its not perfect, but it can be useful I guess. Personally, I prefer to have another computer available with the real thing on it... Which is easy seeing as most of the pcs here still run win3k.... which means no ie7! David My signature sucks.

You are using a separate program that uses IE6s rendering engine to display HTML and CSS, the actual application may be buggy, but that doesn't matter as you aren't going to be using it for surfing like you would a normal browser, its just for testing what things look like in IE6. It will not be effected by Windows Update, and shouldn't break your Internet Explorer 7. |

go to the browser test page on quirksmode and you'll see what david meant CSS - Conditional comments Time is really the only capital that any human being has, and the one thing that he can’t afford to lose. - Thomas Edison

The only accurate way to do it is to install a regular version of IE7, then install Microsoft's free Virtual Machine software, then put in an 'acquired' version of Win2K or XP, and leave IE6 in it. The second post in this thread, from djeglin, explains the major disadvantage I also came across when using conditional comments... before switching over to the method I describe above. |

The only error I get is sometimes with sites using sifr or flash in IE 6. It throws an alert at me saying you need to press ok for the page to load. Which doesn't happen in "real life" IE 6. (tested on another machine). Conditional comments pose no problem whatsoever. |

Forgive me if this has been posted a thousand times before, but have you tried browsershots.org? It's not an ideal solution for development since you can't use it to keep testing changes on the fly, but for checking how things look in over 30 different browser versions once a site is more or less complete it's a useful tool. They support MISE 5.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0. |

emil, if you've got 5.5 installed on your system, try quirksmode on that and you'll see how wrong that is. Time is really the only capital that any human being has, and the one thing that he can’t afford to lose. - Thomas Edison
