Web designer wanted

Hi,

Phrixus Theatre company are looking for a web designer.

I'm afraid since we are in the beginnings of starting up the company no payment can be offered. This could provide work for a portfolio and we would be happy to credit you as the site designer on all pages.

Any offers gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Ellie

No one is going to work for free. End of story.

Why would anyone work for free when they could build up a portfolio on their own and go to a real employer (start-up or not) and get paid. Get some capital together, get some investors if need be.

I swear all these "we'd like to hire you, but you have to work for free" people must be 13 year olds who don't know a damned thing about the way the world works.

I find these threads insulting to the profession - and what really gets me is that because the industry is at saturation point, some poor student somewhere will no doubt take up the offer. Slave labour.

Hi Guys,
Thank you for your replies. I understand the view that you have both expressed. However, if you call that exploitation i suggest that you take some time out of your profession and examine the work of others. People who work in theatre often have to work unpaid for years in order to build up their name. Even then people are often very poorly paid. But people chose this difficult option because they enjoy their work, as i would hope you enjoy yours. However web designers (and companies) are fortunate to be paid generously for their work by large global companies, this means that web design companies and designers continually drive up their prices which in turn means that small companies and not for profit organisations are priced out of the market and cannot afford a decent web design. As i have said i do understand your concern and i believe any skilled worker deserves to be paid for his/her work - but also from time to time and for the mutual benifit of those involved it is necessary to offer support to others. I was merely asking for someone who enjoys their work to design a simple website that they could include as part of their portfolio which would in turn help them to get future work. This mutual helping of others is what good society is based on. Finally, i am not forcing you to design a site for me, if you are not interested move on - its not a problem, i realised this post was a long shot but considered it worth a try. Sorry to rant.

Thanks for reading

Ellie

I don't see how this could benefit anyone but yourself?

Would you ask a producer to fork up for one of your plays, then tell him you're not going to pay him but you'll put his name in the programme?

I think not.

Where's that car salesman animation when you need it.

Suppose we could put forward the trade how about you provide actors, directors, set dressing, lighting for a play we write ourselves for no charge at your theatre and run it at a loss until the costs equal the costs we would charge?

You should be banned purely for expecting anyone qualified to do any job for free unless they offer, I won't insult you but I feel like doing so.
