Design Careers

I have my heart set on going to college for web design and I'm wondering, is it a practical profession? And for those who have already made it their profession, how do you enjoy it?

Universities are generally behind the times when it comes to web development.

Maybe consider a graphic design degree and learn the web stuff on the side. It also depend on whether you want to do front end design - graphics/XHTML/CSS/JavaScript, etc - or backend development - PHP/MySQL/Ruby/etc.

For the first, a graphic design degree might be most suitable. For the second, computer science might be most suitable.

I hope nobody minds if I add another question to the post. I'm assuming graphic design is a suitable profession and it makes a reasonable amount. Does anybody know of the where the best places are for art colleges/careers in america (I was guessing NYC but maybe I'm wrong)

Yea, I recommend look at graphics design courses, or computer science courses, as pgo says. Im doing a multimedia creation degree, which was the closet thing my College has to any web design. The tutors don't teach you any proper html/css (they dont know it beyond table layouts), and all I'm doing now (3rd year) revolves around throwing things into a flash interface, and nothing to do with the web.

I'm not too sure about New York but they seem to have a good school somewhere in the area for just about anything you can think of. I know for a fact that Chicago not only has amazing art schools, but historic relevance as well. I have a friend attending the Art Institute of Chicago and she loves it more than anything.

I started it as a hobby but now it's my profession. Sometimes I feel we should not make our hobby a profession as then we don't have any hobby left

Anyhow it's a good profession as long as you enjoy doing it.

Best of Luck.

Sorry but you sound right corporate even with your normal speak, this place is dominated by a great community of sarcastic and facetious bastards, that's what makes it great, you can't say what someone can and can't do, this is the internet!

p.s he was probably referring to 26 posts in 1 day.
