So I took your advice and got a real site sorted.

Hay guys...got your point. My site was crap...wish my friends had told me the truth...got a template and worked with it in FrontPage.

Now I thought it might be a good idea to let you guys have a quick look at let me know what crap I put together this time instead of relying on those friends who apparantly, know less than I do.....if that is at all possible.

Here's the problem. My webspace provider is 1&1 and my previous site was put together in PagePlus and uploads no problemo...I am using the same username and password attempting to upload FrontPage version to the same url but it aint 'aving any of it.

All I get is messages like 'operation requires end user permission' and 'website doesn't exist'

Any idea's.....please.

Paul

Why do you just try to upload the html files through a FTP client and not through FrontPage.

PS. Get Dreamweaver.

Hi liquid6,

Thanks for your thoughts....if you saw my previous attempt at web design you will realise that I know nothing about the process. I dont know how to upload in the way you suggested.

get filezilla
http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

It's an app that connects to your server, and allows you to upload files via a graphic interface, much like your windows explorer window.

you need three things

- host address
- username
- password

the second two you should already have, the host address info you might be able to get from your control panel, otherwise give em a call for it.

funkyprem...thanks for the confirmation. That is exactly what I thought I needed.

You are right the user and password I have and I am using the same address as I did for uploading the old site because it is to the same provider. i.e. 1&1

if I am right , and I am sure someone will soon tell me if I am not, it will be the one 1&1 gave me to upload to them and looks like this:-

s192828350.websitehome.co.uk

It still don't wanna know....grrrrrr

haha, Oli I demand that this become a quote at the top of DT, like one of those client recommendations you see on corporate sites.

Perhaps add under it, "At Designerstalk, we aren't afraid to point out you can't design for toss"

ok gents, and ladies if there are any, I have finished my new improved site....trust me it is improved...using FrontPage and now I want to upload it. So I go to File and then Publish Web.

Easiest part, or so I thought....why oh why is the Publish Web greyed out??

Please I am dying to get your 'honest' opinions on my new site.

We would need to see it first. I know you can't post links so just type in THISISMYNEWEBSITE.com - but your domain.

He can't upload it. Keep up!

I can't help, I have no idea how frontpage tries to do things, but I expect its an arse-about-tit way. In fact I think I might write on my CV 'I do not know how to use Frontpage', It'll probably increase my job prospects.

Don't you have to install frontpage extensions onto the server or something?

Yes I think you do but FrontPage is easily exploitable

Hi, what you first may need to set up is an FTP account. Use whatever control panel you're given to get to the FTP section and check your account info or make a new account. Once you have done that, ftp your website

PS. When i was on a shared host, (many years ago before mt existed), I found it much easier to just upload my files using an upload form instead of messing around w/ ftp functionality built into programs.

hey mrPaul, i looked at your site, much better than before, but a major problem with your site is that it does not make use of CSS. CSS allows for easy design management as the design is separate from the content.

you could change your background easily with css

hi swiecki. thanks for your comments. I am very pleased that you feel that there is an improvement...no point in changing it if there were not.

Ok, I understand that CSS stands for cascading style sheets but that is about as far as my knowledge goes. Iv'e tried to read up on it but I think it will take me a while to understand enough to do something with them.

I would like to get rid of the side graphics and leave just the grey background colour as in the head where the car and logo will eventually go. Am I right in saying that I would easily be able to do that once I understand CSS?

understanding CSS will help you to change the design easily, and control properties of the design that you are unable to control now. (such as the way your background tiles)

It is simple to create a background like the following:

http://themes.wordpress.net/testrun/?wptheme=172

by using an image like this and telling the browser (using CSS) to tile it on the y axis.

thanks for that swiecki...ill be looking at learning more about CSS in future. In the meantime, you would have noticed that the right hand side of my site is not perfectly aligned like the left. Is there an easy fix to this or am I looking at CSS to fix it?

I would appreciate your views.

Paul

Definately better than I expected. Most obvious thing is that it seems to be lacking any header content.
