Website pricing please

Hello,

Was wondering if anyone could give me a realistic price of a site I would like to have please, I have tried to get quotes from firms but they have stated stupid prices and I want to know if they are genuine or not. The site I want is a flight only travel site for bookings and online payments, a little similar to the following

majortravel.co.uk

Any advice of reasonable prices would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

It's the backend which would cost you the money, from your provided link you do not require much from the design just simple functionality.

Simple answer being it's not even worth imagining a price untill you've sat down and explained everything you want and how things are going to work down to the final nail.

Only then can a price be calculated, well from me anyway

Yeah, you are definateley asking quite a lot. Here is my breakdown:

Custom Graphic Design: $1,500 (minimum)
Flash Graphics: $500 - $2,000 (minimums -Depends on Actionscript)

Here is what you care mostly about.
Data Driven: $4,000 (minimum)
CMS (Content Management System): $3,000 (minimum)

So as you can see - the cost can get quite high. I am assuming that the firms you spoke with quoted quite high - thus that is why they are "stupid quotes."

I hope this helps.

I think that company where I work could make it for 2000-2500 USD. Better design, and better programmer work.

Thanks for all the advice, When I got the quotes they didn't break down the costs of each element for me so thanks Greg for that. Looks like I may have to think again as to the content I might want on it.

i'm not sure if the figs above are in gbp or not but here in Australia if anyone quotes under 5 figures for this type of site to be done properly then you can be fairly sure they are not a professional web design & development company

My quote was in gbp. And yes i aggree if it is not into 5 figures in $'s then it definatly won't be a professional company.

However as John Good says, people need to pay bills so there is probably more than likely to be an idependant designer at professional standard in web development who will do the job cheaper.
Remember, when you hire an agency your paying for a "security" as well as the design work.

When you hire an agency, the agency hires an independent 9 times out of ten.

ok fair enough points. this issue is getting to me lately - it's come up quite a lot on this forum too. people out there seem to think web designers/developers wave some kind of magic wand and - hey presto - one cool website. most of these people don't get the interweb. they need to get some kind of education/reality check about what goes on behind the scenes to put together a website like the travel one mentioned by the op. it's like those dvd special features that show all the artists putting together just one scene for a movie. people see gandalf fighting the balrog in the mines of moria and go "oh yes - that's pretty gobsmackingly amazing" but they don't see the 941 artists & technicians who put in 70,441 hours for that 2 minute scene.
