800 x 600, yo.

Just because screens are getting bigger doesn't mean websites need to.

I agree, Samuel. There's a point where it's not really practical to have a design be so wide, even if everyone in the world had monitors that would accomodate it. I would hope that we never really go any wider than 1024, even if we can.

If people really think about it, a book or magazine is, give or take, the same general "perceptive" width as 800-1000 pixels. So that's kind of what we're used to dealing with when reading or browing through informational materials. It seems more natural than having such a huge area to take in visually.

This site is a perfect example...it's set at about 1040 wide, yet nothing is really gained. The content is just spread out with a lot of empty space.

IMHO

800x600. My attitude is, I don't really need 1024, I don't think I design much better in it, so I might as well go with 800x600 for the fogies and the PDA users. No doubt I'd reconsider if I really needed more than 750 pixels, though I think I actually do like 800 more aesthetically.

1024x768 and going up. But mostly I try to make fluid designs as much as possible, and if not fluid, then it's 1024x768 for me.

955 x 600 (1024 x 768 maxed)

min widths and height are a good substitute and for mobile content I just bring in another style sheet.

800x600, because while people may have their screen set to 1024 or higher, they may not view things full screen. I always have multiple windows open at multiple sizes.

A well designed site doesn't need to be full screen, it's the content that really matters, not the size of the design.

I actually agree with this.

Personally I keep my browser window smaller than my screen size. Maybe at about 880 by 900 so I don't loose access to my desktop.

I don't maximize my browser. At work I keep it windowed at 1280x1024 (screen resolution 1920x1200) and at home I keep it windowed at 1280x950 (screen resolution 1680x1050).

It's a fair point; but while 800 isn't ideal, it's better zoomed than 1024 whilst still a reasonable size for larger resolutions. It's just a preference.

I see it, nowadays, as not that big of deal. Most people nowadays have a 1024x768 screen, so it's just what you like working with and what you think your audience will like and what goes best with your site design.
