hey - it's design related!!

Ok, here's a design related subject:
[b:bf330aec68]What do you love / hate in design - ?[/b:bf330aec68]
Let's compile a list of in's and out's. We could then vote on the subjects... (and make monthly statistics *geek*) we could maybe use this to spot trends...?
Here is a couple of things that bother me:

when 45 degree angle shapes (e.g. tabs) are mixed with 'random degree' angles... when you can see that it has been done without thought.

images with 'feather' effect round the edge. (and when the client is asking for it!!!)

swooshy logos for internet related companies (has anybody noticed this). Outdated cliche!

oval buttons. Do I need to say more?

positive things:

dashed lines trend

rounded corners are coming back:} (I think so, anyway)[/b]

I don't know about defining the in's and out's - Isn't it being a bit stuck up your own ass? Some of the things listed can be used effectively in good design, who's really got the right to dismiss a design style as if they are The Design Master?

but Comic Sans sucks!

if we're talking [b:7d31d7177e]hate[/b:7d31d7177e] then :: sites where the main content is in a pop-up window - why is this ? no need what so ever. I may have mentioned this point once or twice before

I think popups can serve a purpose if they're used (v) sparingly for a reason ie not for adverts or every area of a site (and I've seen a few of those).

I think they can be useful to reference information that could be wanted at any point during site use, copyright notices etc. could be one example, they can be viewed without interrupting the flow of the users experience. Of course unexpected or gratuitous popping does exactly that, I guess it's all just a matter of balance like so many other things.

They can also be useful in a development sense. I have used them as a temporary solution to adding sections to Flash sites that were not originally specified in the brief (news, copyright etc... damn indecisive clients). They are quicker and cost less to implement while the main site is re shuffled to accommodate the new content.

I often use them to pop up a new window for Flash sites, why have your design surrounded by chrome that serves no purpose when all navigation has to be done within the site design. I've found it's something clients want of their Flash sites as-well, it helps truly brand the site as an object as it removes it from the regular browser environment. It pops up... ooo something new (OK it's not exactly like that, but you get what I'm driving at).

have to agree with Dan...
It's the advert-pest that contributes to their bad reputation!
DT is using a popup for the emoticons - and it works very well - try to imagine that not bien a popup? THAT would be annoying...

I agree they are ok for things like the emoticons, I meant - mainly on flash sites, the whole site content is in the popup. Why not just use the original window?

HATE:
- Bevels
- Tasteless Drop shadows
- Glows
- Lens flares and other tacky photshop filters

LIKE:
- Simple designs
- Compatible colour combos

Why does nobody use serif fonts anymore?
