I think http://www.volumeone.com/ is a good example of a website that is important to have a splash purely because it looks fuckin' cool every season!

Just clicked the link - I ended up here: http://www.volumeone.com/dev/22/index.html which isn't a splash page. Its got the main menu with links to the different pages; its the homepage.
So unless volumeone have taken greenfruit's advice and set their splash page to refresh to the main page immediately, they don't use a splash.

PS (the site does look nice though)

It is a nice site but why the pop-ups ??
To me theyre more annoying than a splash page could ever be.

I agree.
I'm not anti popup, but they have to be used with some consideration (like animated gifs, flash, frames etc) and aren't needed at all on this site. It still looks nice though.

On the subject of splash pages, we use them on club sites quite a bit for one reason......they make loads of money!

Whilst they are a pain sometimes, if you want to get over a marketting message to your users its highly effective when used sparingly, with click through rates being much much higher than banner adverts.

I've heard they know all the tricks to get hits. Search engine ratings, splash pages, popups, sticky content ...

Sorry, they used to always have nice splash pages.

Ah well, I guess splashes have had their day!

Here's a comment: I'm not sure if the using 'logo-recipe' for the section titles is healthy for the logo - I think it makes it disappear a bit.

our hosting company actually got shut down....

we recently switched hosts.

we lost our database for the site itself, forum is all good.

recently started on version 2 of the site.
