use PNG's for all good browsers, throw GIF's to the oldies. as for tips - only time they look decent is by applying a matte, but that'll only work if you know in advance what colour(s) they'll be overlaying..

what sort of gifs? type/titles? then apply a matte in the background colour of choice.
if it's an icon/small graphic you can retouch the margins at 1600 magnification until they look ok.
Not many options, except what cam has already suggested.

if you change the bg, you'll change the css as well, so if the images are put with css you can create separate folders to pick the images from.
I prefer using gifs that way, since they are usually smaller in file size than pngs.

Can only do that with hard edges with GIFs

As said above, PNG is the way to go.

And why not get around it? It is hard? You are lazy? What? What is the fucking problem?

Know that even if a meteor was about to crash our tiny planet to pieces, Microsoft would not *change* IE6 so it supports everything you want by default.
In case you haven`t noticed - they have IE7 now. It supports PNG.
If you want to have your PNGs supported in IE6 you just have to use behaviors.

It is dumb to keep talking about issues with legacy browsers. You just go around the issues and that`s it.

*sigh* question was tips for transparancies.

I pointed out that IE6 has poor support for them. which alot of people still using IE6 as vista in all its glory has not graced the entire world yet. and it may well be some time before IE7 is the standard IE.

As nobody pointed out this pitfall, I did. Silly me.

It doesn't have poor support, it just has a non standard implementation.

Here's a tip. Always put a stroke color around your image that somewhat matches the background color of what it's going on top of. this will get rid of all jagged edges.

"universal" transparent gifs must have a hard edge. no antialias! (this would require 256 alpha tranparency - and thats png's).

...or you could make your icons tiny svg's - but i guess it's too fiddly + there will be issues with compatibility. (wild guess based on some experience...) :P
