Hey, I have been away for the past 3 months so haven't had a chance to check on this board much, but now i have returned to the uk. I'm just trying to decide whether going freelance fulltime is the way to go (i have 2/3 fairly small sites on the go at the moment) or getting another fulltime job would be better. The reason being, that i'm moving to london around january time and could do with a stable income while i get myself settled in there, and to get myself out of my overdraft. Any advice, opinions or general info would be splendid! Also, if i decide to freelance just for a couple of months, is it worth registering as self-employed?! How much time / hassle is involved in going solo?! I'm sure this is a subject that comes up quite often but i didn't manage to find anything in my brief searching attempts on here. Thanks, |

Definatly registar as self-employed, I did, it takes just a phone call (as I discovered via this site) It's all well and good freelancing, but it takes time and luck to start the web of contacts that you'll get the work from. If youve got a hot portfolio and website, and examples of work, then you'll probably be ok, if not... then good luck! edit: I freelanced in london for a couple of months, got going really well, then ended up with GlueLondon. Full time work is great if your young designer, if your older/more experienced, freelance is more fun |

That's really useful information, thanks daniel! I'm starting to think i'm too young ( / inexperienced) and don't have enough money to rent somewhere in london which would have a decent enough space to work freelance from. Hmmm.... I've been getting quite a lot of interest / offers of work but mostly for low-budget arty-type projects. The self-employed thing sounds like a good idea though, even if it's just for a couple of months. |
