background pngs maybe? dont know
Hey guys, take a look at http://pure9studios.com/comps/www/ not done or anything but had a question. b/c of the background i want to use for the whole site with the gradient and pattern I was thinking of using .png files for transparency. It works on mac in all browsers and on some PC's. Other PCs make them show up as a grey box ( as the jpg attached in this post ) any ideas how I can fix this problem? http://pure9studios.com/downloads/P9...screenshot.jpg Thanks for your help people, it is appreciated. |

You need a IE png hack, try, http://www.mongus.net/pngInfo/ If not google it, they do work I've used them before. You can also use the 'Opacity' effect in css2, This can be cool for transparent div's and such, look it up. |

Yep. The web design & development community have been complaining about IE and lack of full PNG support for many years now |

It makes me laugh that Microsoft Picture Viewer (the built in screenshots of your images) can show the alpha transparency in PNG 8-32 bit, yet IE6, which the Viewer's engine is based on can't. I don't suggest using a hack just to show the transparency. Browsers that don't support or have Javascript disabled will be at a disadvantage. The whole semi-opaque website designs really puts me off. When I run into them I usually close it straight away or remove styles. They generally do my head in, as in most cases they aren't done effectively. |

A: Browsers that don't support or have Javascript disabled will be at a disadvantage. How will they be at a disadvantage? The hack most sensible people use degrades to a gif alternative. B: The whole semi-opaque website designs really puts me off. When I run into them I usually close it straight away or remove styles. You actually close websites because you are so aggrovated by their use of transparency... or rather view them as plain HTML? Thats odd. |

I'm not as much aggrovated as annoyed by the rising trend in Mac (or vista) transparency look effects. I think websites should hold transparency to extend their design, not to make up most of it. I view a lot of sites through plain HTML, if they have great content but a nasty or migraine-sparking design choices. Especially sites that are pink. Alternatively, if it is a available, I go for RSS feeds if they are some place that I regularly visit. |

This plain HTML brigade (i.e. can't design for toffee / fucking 21st Century Luddites) get right on my tits. I'm looking forward to designing websites that support a proper alpha channel! Stand Free
