I'm having trouble trying to figure out what forum package to use. Security is one of my priorities.

My problem is this: I mangage a web site for my union. On that site I want to puit forums up. I would like those forums to be available to the public, but at the same time, sections of that forum will be for union members only. There may be sesitive union topics being discussed in there, and I want to make sure that those "union member only" sections of the forums are strictly that.

Does anyone know which forum out there is the best to use? I'm looking for either free or for purchace. I have used packages like phpBB and vBulletin. Just currious what your oppinions are.

phpBB is ok but a bit dodgy on security - you have to be on top of updates which can be a pain.
VBulletin is the best really, if you dont mind shelling out for it.

Both offer the option of usergroups which can have forums hidden from the general public.

Vbulletin and IPB are the best for what you are looking for, it sounds like, I prefer IPB, but IPB 2.2 is looking retarded.

I don't like Vanilla personally. I like more traditional forums.

I love Vanilla, but just one problem with it, I would rather then index page be categories, not latest posts, then have a link for latest posts, haven't got into looking into it enough to see if you can change that.

I have for a little while, I like them more then PHPbb but less then IPB, VB, Vanilla.
