Been sneeky today

Because I can't get definitive information on how much to charge for websites, I've been posing as a friend of the client I'm working for atm, and emailing various web designers, with decent online portfolios, an email describing what I need for a site along with a photoshop mockup of the homepage that I say, in the email, I like, but can't use because it's for something else (when in actuality it's the homepage mockup I plan to send my client).

I know, I know, it's low, and it's wasting people's time-just got off the phone with a guy from Tulsa (hope it wasn't you PGO, hehe), we talked for 30 min about web stuff. I shouldn't have to do this. Another designer and I talked on the phone twice today, and he's already sent me a nice estimate *.PDF. He quoted me $2500 for the static site 'I'm after'. It's shrewd, but I have to comprehend the value of a site, I feel like it's really holding me back, it's starting to piss me off.

Of course, you've got that fact to contend with, that no two sites are alike and there's no concrete universal pricing model for website dev. It's as if people just charge whatever they feel like charging. aye.

At the basic level, decide how long it'll take you, multiply by your hourly rate.

So, if your hourly rate is $30 and you think the project will take 50 hours, that's $1500. Which reminds me I have to send someone a quote.

And it wasn't me. I'm an hour from Tulsa.

Heh, ok. What outfit are you with anyway? Maybe I'll call and harrass them, too. Thanks.

Received the following quotes from misc designers:

$300
$700
$1260
$1800
$2500

That's quite a gamut. $300 is riciculous, I'd hate to see what results that would procuce. $2500 seems like it may be pushing it, but then again. For a static, informational site with good CSS, a contact form, etc, it might justify the expense, especially if the design was top-shelf. Hmmm...

I'm only 24 hours from Tulsa, one day away from your heart.

Find out: http://www.stickandink.com/about/

When I talk about sending out quotes and all that, I'm talking as a freelancer. Not as an employee.

He was probably saying that with a sharpened object in his hand. But, I see you default to assuming it as some sort of rainbow expression. Hmmm...

Yeah, I prefer not entangling my employer's reputation with this bunch of perverts and foul-mouthed sailors.

Haha. Sounds like you're a good employee then.
