Do you, or is it really tacky? If you don't what do you do to leave your mark? <meta author>? comment tags? Or nothing at all?

Depends who the client is.
Most of my work is for other design agencies and don't always want to promote a similar service provider.

usually specify it when talking to clients...

"I'd like to add a link, is that ok?"

Although had one client who insisted I put a link back to my site on thiers. They completely ignored every suggestion I had, resulting in a shit site. I didn't put the link on it.

Yep, footer link. I usually check with the client beforehand though.

Footer link, check with them beforehand. I provide a backlink if it's going in my portfolio.

But if it's crappy I won't put it in my portfolio nor associate myself with it in any way.

Footer link. Not without client agreement. Such a link is highly recommended from the SEO point of view.

I might put something in meta tags, but I do feel like it's tacky to have my url on a clients site.

Most of the time when I see it, it reminds of a 14 year old and just seems unprofessional. We were advised against it in school too, for that reason.

I know some companies do it, but I've never been a huge fan.

I prefer having clients, I can meet face to face. Mostly to get a vibe on how things will work out, I find it's difficult to do that with most online clients.

I usually network, and just make myself known as a designer and developer, and get work. I try to have business cards on hand, and just ready to meet people. I know the web can bring a lot of clients, but on the same token, they're far less reliable.

When I was younger and just starting out, I lost so much money because of web clients due to lack of contracts, and the fact I didn't really know who they were and if they would really pay.

I know many disagree, but I am not a huge fan of online clients and I prefer being able to meet people and businesses and just network that way.

Footer link and only if I'm satisfied with the product. Some clients can really corrupt a good layout.

I've never had one client call or email and say they clicked the link I had put at the bottom of old websites. Usually they inquire through the client, that way they can also get the lowdown on how you were to work with. You don't see major corps. with "Designed by" at the bottom usually, only on small biz websites. The only rerason is if you're also hosting the site or the client requests it as a technical contact.

True, but they probably have inhouse designers/developers.

That and they pay well enough that they don't have to provide a backlink.

If they bring anyone in, they usually bring in consultants who may direct the process, but they don't outsource their entire website project.

Just had a brain fart, perhaps it may be best to make another page, an "accessibility statement" as sometimes these are required. Then at some point during that you can bung in a link to yourself with lots of relevant SEO buzz words in the content around it.

Think thats the way to go from now on!

totally agree with this. i won't put our name (usually i just put our logo in the corner as a link) on crap & clients will often make our work look like crap somehow.

plus i believe a link / logo is a must whether you want new work or not. it gets your name around & it raises your profile if the work is good or the client is cool.

yeah this is most often the case - though with this site we did recently :

http://www.quintessentially.com/qube

which is a private members club - the client wanted to be exclusive & field all requests. we didn't mind as they were paying good, asking us to do cool new things (a full social networking site) & are long term clients of ours who are always good to their word.
