-I'm hearing that the following two domains are totally different:

www.domain.com

domain.com

-Is this true?

No. www is a subdomain. So like sometimes corporate sites will have mail.domain.com for their webmail access. www is the standard subdomain for web traffic, or at least it was. But now that's not necessary so most of the time www.domain.com will be the same as domain.com.

However, a server can be setup as to make the two different.

During the summer my university were redeveloping the website/intranet site and http://edgehill.ac.uk would give you a plain HTML login form, and http://www.edgehill.ac.uk would give you the main website.
