Just came accross this site:
http://www.victorme.com/

Anyone else think this site has totally copied myspace(one of the biggest fuck-up's the web has to offer)?

Haha, yes. But MySpace is so generic and hardly designed at all - usability, accessibility, aesthetics...these all fly out the window on MySpace.

The design & implementation of myspace are both atrocious, the only good thing about it was the concept.

Why pay designers when the world is already eating out of their hands? I hope to God that they use that money for an upgrade soon. I will sleep better at night.

You say the design/useability etc. on myspace is bad but it hasn't stopped X million people using it. So they must be doing something right.

They are doing something right - millions of people use it because it's useful (which is different than "usable") and highly customizable. Most of my friends are on there (which means I got dragged kicking and screaming). I might find it obnoxious, but they think it's great.

Also, didn't Paul Rand say something about how people are more accustomed to bad design than good design, so they feel more comfortable in a badly designed environment? Something like that.

Well, the problem is that not every one of them has a good eye. All they care about is their ability to make it "theirs..." to say "look at MY space, look what I've customized and created." And when it comes down to it, they're really proud of it. So, myspace lives up to their name 100%. They give the ability to make it "your space." Unique isn't beauty, sadly. But seriously, who would be proud of customizing their font AND background color to be the same. "EVERYBODY COME SEE WHAT A CRAPPY EXPERIENCE I'VE MADE FOR YOU AT MY PAGE! What? You can't read ANYTHING. Oh, just drag your mouse across the entire page to highlight all the text.

And that's why it's successful. It's like Geocities or AOL - it appeals to the lowest common denomenator, the technologically unsavvy masses.

Sorry, had to let out my elitist geek for a second.

theres a kind of myspace thing here in Japan called "mixi". It's actually very well built and insanely popular. All you can change about it is your three profile photos and your profile text. Mainly it serves as a blog and community place. Has many of the features myspace does, some better ones in fact.

Although myspace is popular because you can customise it to death, right?

Hey hawken, are you native or do you just live in Japan? I've been studying the spoken language for a bit.

i believe it started with friendster.com. then friendster became slow as hell and people started migrating to myspace. all of your friends are most likely using it. why join another site if you know everyones already on myspace? so yes, redundant answer: myspace is popular because everyone uses it.

it really has nothing to do with design. why would a 16 year old care if you're using tables or divs/css?

There are alot out there like myspace and probably work better in the sense that myspace takes forever at night b/c everyones on there. Myspace just hit it big first. I personally hate myspace, its kinda played now.

The design sucks but like Iblastoff said, people dont care, only us designers who look into these things. LOL

I'd just like to see myspace implement a maximum width on all pages. That would, at least, be a start...
...nah, it would just confine all the bullshit.
