Hmmm. Now, I've seen this sort of response to a negatively critical response, but never to a helpful one...I don't get it.

Indeed - I only posted it because I was reading that very thread a couple of days ago after wondering the same thing.

FWIW, I've haven't used web safe for at least 5 years and never had any reason to. Colour consitency is so bad accross monitors anyway that you can't be too precious about your colours. I design on a colour profiled screen done with a Pantone Spider thingy, what you'll see at the clients ancient 15" TFT can be quite different.

Cant be arsed to read the older thread, but I will say that there is still a use for websafe colours... they provide a seamless colourmatch between different image types that overlap/sit next to each other.

Web safe colours are no longer considered important, as most web browsers can display any hexadecimal values correctly. However there are still people who prefer to use 'em.

The only problem that can occur is when users can't view the colours that you set for your websites properly. Their browsers may simply choose the "closest" colour to the one that you specified, which often results in really poor colour schemes and/or unreadable text. But like I said, you really don't have to worry about that sort of thing anymore.

Heh, yeah. At work, if my work creeps over the border between my two monitors it looks like two different things. Totally different. Even simply on the LCD, the top is noticably darker than the bottom of the screen.

Of course, I don't get this at home because my Dell FPW2005 kicks ass.

Isn't "web safe coloring" sooooooo 1998?

Fuck it, it's Friday in most parts of the world...
