Icon gallery/resources

Does anyone know of any sites that have a comprehensive library of icons and glyphs ordered by possible usage/meaning? For instance I'm wondering where I could find a varied collection of different icons/glyphs for different terms - i.e. 'save' (floppy disks, a pen etc.), 'cancel' (stop sign, raised hand etc.) and so on. I haven't really been able to find much apart from individual icon libraries, as opposed to a site that collects and display icons based on possible contexts.

Cheers, James.

Here are a few links that might help:
http://www.coolarchive.com/icons.php (ugly, but divided by category)
http://www.symbols.com/ (symbol encycopedia)
http://www.iconexperience.com/collections.php (os/app icons in different themes)
http://www.kde-look.org/ (os replacement icons -- same concepts different executions)

But most likely you will find that you will end up comparing individual icons from different sets to each other as the best way to accomplish your research...

Some various stock icon sites:
http://www.iconbuffet.com/
http://www.iconkits.com/
http://www.iconbase.com/
http://www.theiconstudio.com

hope that helps ...

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Chick: the symbol encycopedia is fascinating, thanks for that! I'm actually interested in finding something the opposite of that though - instead of defining symbols, something that will suggest symbols. If I find anything more I'll post it.
