Aye, I recently had someone telling me their modem was getting full up, noisy and required defragmenting and also being quite adamant that their new PC couldn't cut copy and paste. Sigh.

^^^ Haha, that's what I tell people. I see they've loaded their computer with Bonzi Buddy, Weather Watcher crap, and spyware, adware, viruses galore.

Heck, I ought to start just putting a Firefox shortcut on the desktop, replacing the default icon with the IE icon, and naming it "Internet". They'd never know the difference.

I wasn't aware that those days had passed yet.

Just had to work on one of my dad's friends' computers. It's some piece of crap Dell with a Pentium 2. She said, "It needs a new motherboard."

So, I switch it on and it boots. Hmmm. Windows runs - albeit slowly - but it works. Run some diagnositics, checked for driver issues, etc. Seems fine.

"It doesn't need a new motherboard - it's fine."
"Well, I need one so I can get on America Online."
"Wait, do you mean 'modem'?"
"Yeah, whatever it's called."

So, I went to Newegg and ordered a $10 modem. Magically, the motherboard works now.

I'm automatically elected "computer fix-it guy". I'll be driving home from work one day and my dad will call me on my cell - "Hey, just thought you'd like to know, I volunteered you to fix So-And-So's computer this weekend."

Thanks Dad.
