How to layout and design a web site.

Does anyone know of a web site that offers info on the basics of web design? How to layout and design a website? Not using HTML, CSS, Photoshop, as those are the tools, but something that teaches people that have little creative training to conceptualize the design of a site that visually looks good.

I see all these great looking web sites, but how do you develop the ability to do something like that? Is there a web site that helps people to learn how to do that sort of thing?

My other option is to find a good college or online course. Do you have any recommendations?

Is there a demand for this sort of thing? Is it better to settle with a web template? Should I bother spending the time to learn how get good at designing graphics for a web site?

Thanks.

no there isnt a website that teaches it - certainly not. Its not that easy and there is no quick fix - if it was that easy everyone would be doing it

It sounds like you only want to design and not build sites? Well youre limiting your market there straight away.... ask yourself why would someone pay you to design a site and then pay someone else to build it? Answer: they rarely would - you need to be able to build as well. Not necessarily the whole site but at least the basics of html/css/javascript etc

Good luck... its sounds like you'll need it

It feels like that sometimes.

Web design is just an extension of graphic design, which in itself is takes a while to get the hang of, the basics can be found in books about compostion, colour theory, typography and semantics - but even once you have a grasp of the basics you will need to practice to hone your skills (similar to learning to play an instrument).

Unless this is something you really want and are willing to give a few years to (assuming no previous artistic learning) and are willing to learn the software- get someone else to do it
